Asthma

Definition

Asthma is a disease of the bronchial tubes or airways. Symptoms are a feeling of tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.

Water Treatments

  1. Fomentation on the chest, 2 times a day.
  2. Steam Inhalation, 2 times a day.
  3. Breathing exercises for 10-15 minutes when there is no attack of asthma, 4 times a day.

Breathing Exercises

  • Position: Sit relaxed on a chair, with the back supported by a pillow.
  • Breathe in through the nose. Then purse the lips and pretend you are blowing through a straw. Blow out twice as long as you breathe in. Gradually increase the time of blowing.
  • Relax after blowing and take 3 or 4 normal breaths before you start the pursed breathing again. These can be done in the morning, upon waking up, and in the evening, before retiring. These may be performed also when short of breath while doing other exercises and activities.

Scientific Name: Datura metel Linn.
Other names: Talong-punaya, Talampunay
  • Roll 2 dried leaves
  • Use as cigarette every 6 hours.

Frangipani

Scientific name: Plumeria acuminate Ait
Other Names: Frangipani, Temple power, Graveyard flowerKalasasiKalatsutsi ,Karatutsi,Kalachuchi
  • Roll 2 dried leaves
  • Use as cigarette, one in the morning and one in the evening.

Tamarind bark

Scientific Name:  Tamarindus indica L.
Other Names: Tamarind, Samabalagi, Salomagi, Sampalok, Salamagi, Salomagi, Sambi, Sambag
  • Chop and boil a one-foot long`` piece of bark in 3 glasses of water for 10 minutes.
  • Dosage:
    • Adults:  1 cup every after meal and at bed time
    • Children:  ½ cup, 4 times a day. (after meals and at bed time)
    • Babies:  2 tsps., 4 times a day (after meals and at bed time

Amaranth

Scientific Name: Amarantus spinosus L.
Other Names: KulitisKalunay
  • Using leaves and flowers
  • Boil 5 chopped young stems with flowers and leaves in 5 glasses of water for 10 minutes.
  • Dosage:
    • Adults:  1 cup, 4 times a day
    • Children:  ½ cup, 4 times a day
    • Babies:  2 tsps., 4 times a day
  • Note: This treatment is specially good for excessive mucus discharge.






Abscesses and Boils

Definition

An abscess is the center of a suppuration or pus collected within a tissue.
boil is a furuncle. Boils and abscesses are characterized by pain, heat and swelling.

Water Treatments

  1. Hot Compress for 30 minutes, 2 times a day until the abscess or boil has ripened.
  2. Hot Sitz Bath for 30 minutes, 2 times a day if abscess or boil is on or around the rectal and perineal area.

Herbal Remedies

Basella alba, or Malabar spinach

Scientific name:       Basella rubra linn.
Other Names: Malabar Night Shade, Alugbati
  •  Leaves poultice
  • Crush 2 leaves
  • Apply as poultice, 2 times a day.

Marigold

Scientific name:       Tagetes erecta Linn.
Other Names: Amarillo
  •  Leaves poultice
  • Crush 3 leaves and 2 flowers
  • Apply as poultice, 2 times a day

Hibiscus

Scientific name:       Hibiscus rosa-seninsis Linn.
Other Names: China rose, Gumamela
  • Leaves and flowers poultice
  • Chop 5 leaves and 2 flowers
  • Apply directly on abscess or boil as poultice

Jackfruit

Scientific Name:      Artocarpus heterophylla Lmk.
Other Names: Langka, Nangka
  • Juice or sap (milky juice from the tree trunk) compress
  • Get the milky juice from the trunk and mix with a little vinegar
  • Warm the mixture and use it for hot compress. Use small pieces of clean cloth or gauze as compress. Apply for 20 minutes, 2 times a day.

Elumea

Scientific Name:      Blumea balsamifera
Other Names: Elumea, Ngaicamphor, Sambong, Kaliban, Kalibura, Gabon subusub
  • Leaves poultice
  • Chop 5 fresh leaves
  • Apply directly as poultice on abscess or boil, 2 times a day.

Charcoal

  • Chop or powder charcoal, then wet with water and wrap in a handkerchief or a clean piece of cloth.
  • Apply directly as poultice, 2 times a day.



Bee and Wasp Stings


Description

Bee and wasp stings could be very painful; the pain could last for several days.

Herbal Remedies

Do any of the following:
  • Immediately rub the bitten area with vinegar or Chinese orange juice until the pain subsides.
  • Rub the bitten area with any toilet soap. Don’t rinse the soap with water, leave it on till dry.
  • Rub the bitten area with moist baking soda for 5 minutes. Repeat after 2 hours if still itchy and painful.

Bleeding Wound

Description:

A wound is a cut or break in the skin and flesh resulting from injury.

First Aid

Get a piece of clean cloth and apply pressure directly over the wound for 10 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop after 10 minutes of manual pressure, reinforce the cloth with a thicker piece of material and apply more pressure over the wound. Bandage snugly but not too tight. Let the patient lie down and bring him immediately to the nearest hospital or clinic if the wound is big and will need suturing. Observe for numbness and discoloration of the toes or fingers. If there is numbness and discoloration of the toes or fingers, the bandage is too tight. Loosen but don’t remove it.

Herbal Remedies for Mild Bleeding

Young Banana Leaves

Scientific Name:  Musa paradisiaca L.
  • Pound young leaves until soft and juicy
    • Drop the juice over the wound. Apply with pressure the pounded leaves over the wound. Bandage snugly but not too tight. If bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes, bring the patient to the nearest hospital or clinic for proper treatment.

Mayana

Scientific Name:  Coeus blumei Benth.
Other names: Lampunaya, Dafronaya, Tapunaya,  Daponaya
  • Wash the young leaves. Crush and extract the juice from the leaves.
    • Drop few drops of juice directly on the wound. Apply the crushed leaves as poultice. Bandage snugly but not too tightly to interfere with circulation.


Burns

Definition

burn is an injury on the skin and flesh resulting from application of heat, radiation, friction and electricity.

Water Treatments

  1. Soak burn area in cold water immediately.  Soak for 10 minutes to relieve pain.
  2. If there are blisters, do not puncture the blisters, keep dry and clean. Keep from flies and dust. Cover the burn area with a clean piece of cloth. Iron cloth before using it to cover the burn area.
  3. If the burn involves a large area of the body, bring the patient to the nearest hospital. Do not do anything to the patient, let him lie down and cover him with clean sheet and keep him warm.
  4. If the burn area is small, soak in warm salt solution for 20 minutes after 24 hours. Formula  for warm salt solution: ½ cup of salt in a basin of warm water, or ½ cup in a pail of water. Soak once a day for 3 days until burn dries up.

  • Wash leaves with soap and water. Pound the leaves and extract juice
  • Apply juice on the burn area after soaking in warm salt solution once a day.

Annatto

Scientific name: Biva orillana Linon
Other Names: AtsueteAsuiteSutis
  • Wash leaves with soap and water. Boil 10 leaves in 5 glasses of water. Let it cool
  • Soak the burn area for 10 minutes, once a day


Cough

Description:

Productive cough due to congestion and bronchitis.

Water Treatments

  1. Formentation on the chest and back.
  2. Steam Inhalation

Vitex negundo, Five-leaved Chaste Tree

Scientific Name:  Vitex Negundo L.
Other Names: Lagundi, Kamalan, Dangla, Tugas
  • Boil 4 tablespoons of chopped dried leaves or 6 tablespoons of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes.
  • Dosage:
    • Adults: ½ cup, 3 times a day
    • Children: (Babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day
      • (2-6 yrs.) 2 tbps., 3 times a day
      • (7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day

Oregano leaves

Scientific Name:   Origanum vulgare by Carolus Linnaeus
Other Names: Torongil de Limon, Suganda, Oregano
  • Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes
  • Dosage:
    • Adults: ½ cup, 3 times a day
    • Children: (Babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day
      • (2-6 yrs.) 2 tbps., 3 times a day
      • (7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day

Indian Chrysanthemum

Scientific Name: Chrysanthemum indicum L.
Other names: Mansanilyamums, chrysanths
  • Boil 1 cup of chopped dried leaves and flowers or 1 ½ cup of fresh leaves and flowers in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes.
  • Dosage:
    • Adults: ½ cup, every 4 hours
    • Children: (Babies) 1 teaspoon, every 4 hours.
      • (2-6 yrs.) 2 tbps., every 4 hours
      • (7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, every 4 hours.

Coronitas, Lantana camara

Scientific name:  Lantana Camara L.
Other names: Lantana, Sapinit, Koronitas, Kantutay, Bangbangsit, Baho-baho, Bahug-bahug
  • Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves and flowers in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes
  • Dosage:
    • Adults: ½ cup, 3 times a day
    • Children: (Babies) 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day
      • (2-6 yrs.) 2 tbps., 3 times a day
      • (7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, 3 times a day

Alagaw

Scientific name:  Premna Odorata Blanco
Other Names: Adiyo, Alagaw, Anobrang, Pumuhat tangli, Agbaw, Argau, Abgan
  • Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes. Drain and squeeze in 2 calamansi. Put 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Dosage:
    • Adults: ½ cup, every 4 hours
    • Children: (Babies) 1 teaspoon, every 4 hours
      • (2-6 yrs.) 2 tbps., every 4 hours
      • (7-12 yrs.) ¼ cup, every 4 hours


Dandruff

Description:

Dandruff are scales of greasy keratotic material shed from the scalp.

Water Treatments

  1. Wash hair 2 times a week using gugo shampoo or commercial shampoo for dry hair.
  2. Comb and massage head very well after every shampoo.
  3. Apply fresh coconut oil to the head and hair once a week, one hour before shampoo. Massage the oil on the scalp. Leave oil for 10 minutes. Better yet, leave it on overnight before shampoo.
  4. As hair conditioner, put ½ cup vinegar into one gallon water and use this to rinse hair after the shampoo.

Turmeric, Round Turmeric

Scientific Name: Curcuma domestica Valet
Other names: Curcuma longaDilaw, Luyang dilaw, Kilaw, Kuning, kulyan, kunig, kunik, Lampuyang, Kinambol, kalabaga, Dulau
  • Pound the rhizomes.
  • Rub or massage the juice on the scalp and hair. Leave it on overnight and shampoo the next morning

Gugo (bark shampoo)

Scientific name:  Entada phaseikaudes k Meer
Other Names: Gugo, Bayogo, Lipay, Balonas, Barugu, Bayogo
  • Soak the gugo bark in a basin of cold water for 30 minutes  before the shampoo. Squeeze the juice in the water and put the juice of 3 calamansi.
  • Wet hair very well and use this as shampoo. Rinse well. Use vinegar as conditioner if the water is hard.

Aloe vera, Curacao aloe

Scientific Name: Aloe barbadensis Mill
Other Names: Acibar, Sabila, Dilang-buaya, Dilang-halo
  • Extract juice from fresh leaves
  • Apply juice liberally and massage scalp 1 hour before the gugo bark shampoo. Do this once a week for 4 weeks.


Mosquito Bites

Description:

Infected mosquito bites become swollen and painful

Water Treatments:

  1. Rub the infected area with wet soap (any kinds of toilet soap). Don’t rinse with water; let it dry on the skin for 2 hours. If itchiness is not relieved, repeat after 4 hours.

Preventive Measures

  1. Use mosquito nets at night when sleeping. If possible, put screen on all windows and doors of the house.
  2. Keep the surroundings clean and dry. Empty all stagnant water in and around the house.

  • Pound 5-10 leaves and extract the juice
    • Apply the juice directly on the infected bites, 3 times a day.

Scientific name:  Anona squamosal L.
Other names: Atis
  • Unripe fruit and seeds
  • Pound and extract the juice from one unripe fruit.
    • Apply the juice directly on the infected bites, 3 times a day
